2 Movies (and 1 T.V show) that Save my Sanity Every Day

I don't think it would be a stretch to say that most people taking the time to read my blog probably aren't morning people. In my opinion, if you get anything accomplished before 10 AM in your household, you must be some sort of genius... or on some type of drug, either way, I cyber-applaud you.

Now, for all the moms and dads out there that are probably a little more like me, mornings are dreaded with every ounce of your soul. The very thought of stepping down from bed in the morning is the worst part of your day. I felt like this for the longest time, then I discovered something pretty special (for me, anyway).

I have always been an avid movie-watcher myself, which I'm sure many people would attest to that, but the thought of putting my kids in front of the television was always so disheartening. Finally, I found 2 movies and 1 television show that would distract them long enough for me to have my coffee, they are not the best of entertainment, but they aren't so unentertaining that you can't sip your coffee through them.

1. Monster's Inc.

Who would have thought that the movie that would distract a small child for it's entire length (about 90 minutes) would be the one about a young kid that gets kidnapped by the monster in her closet. I haven't experienced the "nightmare" or "monster" stage, but if this movie gets me through 1 or 2 coffees, I will risk Jude having a nightmare or two.

Truly, this movie plays into my generation quite a bit, alluding to children becoming less and less easy to scare (which is economically devastating for the city of monstropolis; a city powered by the screams of children.) Really, when Jude picks this movie to watch, I am actually quite relieved as it's full of humour-for-adults without going too much to the "adult humour" extreme. I've been quite disappointed with shows like "Shrek" and "Cars" for being so indiscrete.

If you don't own it already, pick it up. It retails for about 30 bucks at Wal-Mart, but you generally save a lot of money if you order online, it has definitely been worth every penny for me!

2. Veggie-Tales: Lord of the Beans

If you haven't heard of Veggie-Tales, it's basically about talking, singing vegetables (and a few fruits) learning about christian values. Personally, there are a few of these movies that I could have probably done without seeing, but "The Lord of the Beans" has definitely been a lifesaver. As soon as my son hears the theme song, he starts singing and dancing, not bad for a 5 dollar movie.

The great part about this one is that it's a "Lord of the Rings" spin-off, with half-spoon, half-forks playing the bad guys "sporks". This movie is great for those mornings when you can do nothing but lay on the couch and potentially fall asleep. This tends to happen a lot in my house, especially when little miss Lily is teething!

Also, if you do happen to be awake through the whole movie, it's actually quite entertaining, whether you enjoyed "Lord of the Rings", or not.

And now, the T.V show that saves my sanity... Sponge Bob Sqare Pants!

You've probably heard rumors about the sponge and the starfish having something going on... I have yet to see any real evidence of that, although I have wondered how in the world an 18 month old can be so easily entertained while watching the least intellectually stimulating show that ever aired.

As a subscriber to Netflix (a HUGE moneysaver in my home), I often turn to this show when my house is in desperate need of some TLC. It's great when you don't have to worry about commercials and the show isn't so long that your child is sitting in front of the tv all day long.

One thing I learned recently is that, no matter what your intentions are, you can't do it all. So turn on the T.V and try to do a bit, it'll make the rest of the time so much more enjoyable!
